Dr. Karen J. Dover was born and raised in Ottawa, Ontario and graduated Nepean High School with Highest Honours, having received many awards and medals for her outstanding academic achievements.
Among these were an almost-unprecented, five successive Silver Medals, which were representative of the
highest scholastic performance attainable. An accomplished competitive athlete and musician, as well as
academic, she attended the University of Ottawa on scholarship for undergraduate work, where she was on
the Dean’s Honour Roll for her studies in Biology and Biochemistry, with minors in Music Composition and
French Literature. Again on scholarship, she received her medical education and M.D. at the University of
Toronto, during which time she was the head of choreography for the highly-touted and hilarious medical
show, Daffydil. A medical internship was then completed at the Ottawa Civic Hospital.
Post-graduate training continued with two years of fellowship in Diagnostic Radiology, one year completed
in Hamilton, Ontario at McMaster University, and a second at the University of Ottawa. She
subsequently practiced medicine in the Ottawa region until she accepted a position at the University of
Ottawa Heart Institute in the Department of Cardiothoracic Surgery as a Cardiac Surgical Associate. In
this role, which she has held for fifteen years, she was actively involved in all aspects of Cardiac Surgery ,
including teaching. She also participated in medical and surgical research projects and studies into new drugs
for smoking cessation, as well as minimally-invasive surgery and leading-edge and innovative cardiovascular
surgical techniques.
It is a very natural progression for Dr. Dover into the field of Laser and Cosmetic Medicine and Surgery,
as it will allow her to apply her unique surgical skills and experience with her creative and artistic talents to the
laser and cosmetic medical and surgical procedures. She has studied under the tutelage of some of the
world’s leaders in the field. In particular, her internationally-renowned brother, Dr. Jeffrey S. Dover, one of
the forefathers in the area of Laser Medicine and Surgery, an esteemed dermatologist and scholar, and a
founding-director of Skin Care Physicians of Chestnut Hill in Boston, Massachusetts, has been an
exceptional mentor. She is also indebted to her father, Dr. Mark R. Dover, former Chief of the Division of
General Surgery at the University of Ottawa and the Ottawa Civic Hospital, and Assistant Dean of
Clinical Affairs at the University of Ottawa, who has been another extraordinary role model and a true
master of the ‘art of medicine’
Dr. Karen J. Dover has always enjoyed a great love of music, dance, and the Arts. Travel, cuisine, and
photography have delighted and inspired her for years, but her improvisational painting and artwork are a true
reflection of her creativity. She is the devoted mother to her four children, Sacha, Bronte, Mia and Olivier,
who continue to be her pride and joy.....and her very-talented partner and chef, Jean-Claude Terrettaz, still
makes her laugh!
Dr. Karen J. Dover, M.D., is a licentiate of the Medical Council of Canada, National Board of Medical
Examiners, and the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Ontario. She is a member of the Ontario and
Canadian Medical Associations, the American College of Phlebology, and the American Society of Laser
Medicine and Surgery.
